Spruce Street Suspension Bridge San Diego

It’s always a treat to come across off the beaten path attractions that are not necessarily as widely known as more popular places.

Spruce Street Suspension Bridge in San Diego is among these types of hidden gems and is a fascinating sight to see.

Nestled in a residential area, suspension bridge is easy to pass by without noticing if you’re not looking for it. (Because really, who would imagine such a bridge somewhere in an ordinary neighborhood?)

The bridge is 375 feet long and was built in 1912 as a means of connecting residents of Bankers Hill to the San Diego Electric Railway, which had a substation at Spruce and 4th.

It is also a historical site.

Activities while at the bridge are basically walking across it and taking pictures, so several minutes at the site should be a sufficient amount of time.

Although there’s not a whole lot to do, it’s a nice place to spend some time and appreciate how the bridge – which is anchored to two posts and has no other support underneath the rest of the 300+ feet – is able to hold tens of bodies at a time. The view beneath is also lovely, with lots of green grass and other vegetation, as well as the houses.

(Note: The bridge does wiggle a bit when you walk across, which may make some uneasy. It might also be challenging to cross for those afraid of heights, but the bridge does successfully hold multiple people. It may help not to look down and to keep in mind that lots of others have crossed before.)

If you’re able to visit at a time when there aren’t too many people, it’s also nice to just sit somewhere in the middle and spend some extra time taking in the charming surroundings.
